The Cave Vidgelmir Entrance. Víðgelmir is a lava tube situated in the Hallmundarhraun lava field in west Iceland, around 2 km southeast of Fljótstunga farm in Hvítársíða, Borgarfjörður. The roof of the lava tube has collapsed, creating two large openings near its north end which are the only known entrances. 2022
The Jökulsárlón lake provides outstanding views of the ice cap, a vast dome of ice that rises to a height of 3,000 ft (910 m). It spills to the lagoon 12 mi (19 km) away from the jagged glacier hill to the edge of the water line. The lake developed only about 60 years ago (1948 is mentioned), when the entire area was less than 100 ft (30 m) of glacier, which was only 250 yd (230 m) from the Atlantic Ocean, and 2 mi (3.2 km) away from Vatnajökull. Vatnajökull was at the shore line of the ocean and dropped icebergs into the ocean. However, it started drifting inland rapidly every year, leaving deep gorges en route, which got filled with melted water and large chunks of ice. These icebergs gather at the mouth of the lake's shallow exit, melt down into smaller ice blocks, and roll out into the sea. In summer, icebergs melt and roll down the channel into the sea. The lake does not freeze in winter. Ice water and soil make a unique ecological phenomenon.[citation needed] Jökulsárlón Lake, the "glacier lake", is now reported to have doubled in size in the recent 15-year period. The huge blocks of ice that calve from the edge of Vatnajökull are about 30 m (98 ft) high, which fills the lagoon stocked with icebergs.[5][8][9][10] Some icebergs appear naturally sculpted on account volcanic ash from ancient eruptions that partly covers them. 2022
The Hvítá river flows southward, and about a kilometre above the falls it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages (11 metres or 36 feet, and 21 metres or 69 feet) into a crevice 32 metres (105 ft) deep. The crevice, about 20 metres (66 ft) wide and 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) in length, extends perpendicular to the flow of the river. The average amount of water running down the waterfall is 141 cubic metres (5,000 cu ft) per second in the summer and 80 cubic metres (2,800 cu ft) per second in the winter. The highest flood measured was 2,000 cubic metres (71,000 cu ft) per second. During the first half of the 20th century and some years into the late 20th century, there was much speculation about using Gullfoss to generate electricity. During this period, the waterfall was rented indirectly by its owners, Tómas Tómasson and Halldór Halldórsson, to foreign investors. However, the investors' attempts were unsuccessful, partly due to lack of money. The waterfall was later sold to the state of Iceland, and is now protected.

Harpa was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. The structure consists of a steel framework clad with geometric shaped glass panels of different colours.[3][4] The building was originally part of a redevelopment of the Austurhöfn area dubbed World Trade Center Reykjavík, which was partially abandoned when the 2008 Icelandic financial crisis took hold. The development was intended to include a 400-room hotel, luxury apartments, retail units, restaurants, a car park and the new headquarters of Icelandic bank Landsbanki. As of 2015, apart from Harpa, only the hotel looked likely actually to be built.[5] Construction started in 2007 but was halted with the start of the financial crisis.[2] The completion of the structure was uncertain until the government decided in 2008 to fully fund the rest of the construction costs for the half-built concert hall. For several years it was the only construction project in existence in Iceland.[2] The building was given its name on the Day of Icelandic Music on 11 December 2009, prior to which it was called The Reykjavík Concert Hall and Conference Centre (Icelandic: Tónlistar- og ráðstefnuhúsið í Reykjavík). The building is the first purpose-built concert hall in Reykjavík and it was developed in consultation with artistic advisor Vladimir Ashkenazy and international consultant Jasper Parrott of HarrisonParrott.[6] It houses the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the offices of The Icelandic Opera. 2022

An iceberg is a piece of freshwater ice more than 15 m long[1] that has broken off a glacier or an ice shelf and is floating freely in open (salt) water.[2][3] Smaller chunks of floating glacially-derived ice are called "growlers" or "bergy bits".[4][5] The 1912 loss of the RMS Titanic led to the formation of the International Ice Patrol in 1914. Much of an iceberg is below the surface, which led to the expression "tip of the iceberg" to illustrate a small part of a larger unseen issue. Icebergs are considered a serious maritime hazard. Icebergs vary considerably in size and shape. Icebergs that calve from glaciers in Greenland are often irregularly shaped while Antarctic ice shelves often produce large tabular (table top) icebergs. The largest iceberg in recent history (2000), named B-15, measured nearly 300 km × 40 km.[6] The largest iceberg on record was an Antarctic tabular iceberg of over 31,000 square kilometres (12,000 sq mi) [335 by 97 kilometres (208 by 60 mi)] sighted 240 kilometres (150 mi) west of Scott Island, in the South Pacific Ocean, by the USS Glacier on November 12, 1956. This iceberg was larger than Belgium.[7] Big icebergs are also often compared in size to the area of Manhattan. 2022

Ingvellir (Thingvellir) is a historic site and national park in Iceland, east of Reykjavík. It's known for the Alþing (Althing), the site of Iceland's parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries. On the site are the Þingvellir Church and the ruins of old stone shelters. The park sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates, with rocky cliffs and fissures like the huge Almannagjá fault. 2022
The lighthouse was built on Garðskagi in 1944. At 28 metres it is the highest lighthouse in Iceland and was in second place in a survey which Rögnvaldur Guðmundsson supervised concerning the favorite lighthouses of the Icelandic people. Engineer Axel Sveinsson designed the lighthouse but the lighthouse is a radar transponder and used for weather surveilance.

Breiðamerkurjökull is an outlet glacier of the larger glacier of Vatnajökull and a piedmont glacier in the southern part of Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland. Emerging as a tongue of the Vatnajökull, it ends in a small lagoon, known as Jökulsárlón. Over time, it has gradually been breaking down. 2022
The accident aircraft was flying from Hofn Hornafjördur Airport to Naval Air Station Keflavik, after delivering supplies for the radar station at Stokksnes. En-route the aircraft encountered severe icing and the crew were forced to land on a frozen river at Sólheimasandur. All 7 crew members survived and were rescued by helicopter, but the aircraft was written off (surveyed in USN parlance). The unsalvaged remains of the aircraft were left at the scene. The aircraft serial number 17171, was designated C-117D and was based on the Super DC-3, first flown in 1944.[1] Note that this R4D-8 was built as an R4D-5 (msn 12554) and converted to R4D-8 (msn 43309) in November 1951. All R4D-8 aircraft still extant were re-designated as C-117D in the tri-service designation system introduced from 18 September 1962. 2022

Vatnajökull is the largest and most voluminous ice cap in Iceland, and the second largest in area in Europe after the Severny Island ice cap of Novaya Zemlya. It is in the south-east of the island, covering approximately 8% of the country.
Strokkur is a fountain-type geyser located in a geothermal area beside the Hvítá River in Iceland in the southwest part of the country, east of Reykjavík. It typically erupts every 6–10 minutes. Its usual height is 15–20 metres, although it can sometimes erupt up to 40 metres high.

It is unique from Iceland’s other hot springs in that it is entirely seawater, due to its proximity to the ocean. Gunnuhver stands in the heart of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark where the North Atlantic ridge rises from the ocean, you find 100 different craters and lava fields, bird cliffs, high geothermal areas, black sand beaches, The Bridge Between Continents, geothermal power plants, lighthouses, and exhibitions. 2022
Many Icelandic folk tales have been associated with Barnafoss, the most famous being about two boys from a nearby farm, Hraunsás. One day, the boys' parents went with their ploughmen to a church. The boys were supposed to stay at home, but as they grew bored they decided to follow their parents. They made a shortcut and crossed a natural stone-bridge that was above the waterfall. But on their way, they felt dizzy and fell into the water and drowned. When their mother found out what had happened, she put a spell on the bridge saying that nobody would ever cross it without drowning himself. A little while later, the bridge was demolished in an earthquake. 2022
Skaftafell is a wilderness area in Iceland's Vatnajökull National Park. Its huge glaciers include Skaftafellsjökull and Svínafellsjökull. Trails lead to Kristínartindar Mountain and to the Svartifoss waterfall, which tumbles over black basalt columns. Morsárdalur Valley and the Bæjarstaðarskógur woodlands lie to the west. East, Öræfajökull Volcano is known for its soaring, ice-capped peak, Hvannadalshnúkur. 2002
This must be another one of the most-seen bridges in Iceland. It spans the outfall river from the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and carries the island's ring road, route R1. You can't drive along the south coast of Iceland without eventually passing over this bridge. The hengibrú (suspension bridge) was built in 1966-7, and has a main span of 108m. A ferry operated here from 1932, but before that the river was very difficult to cross. I believe this was one of the last of a series of suspension bridges built in Iceland starting in 1945, and there are obvious similarities to the bridge over Jökulsá á Fjöllum that I featured previously, even though that is 20 years older. 2002
The Cave Vidgelmir is a lava tube situated in the Hallmundarhraun lava field (formed around 900 AD) in west Iceland, around 2 km southeast of Fljótstunga[1] farm in Hvítársíða, Borgarfjörður. The roof of the lava tube has collapsed, creating two large openings near its north end which are the only known entrances. Víðgelmir is 1585 m long and the largest part of the cave passage is 15.8 m high and 16.5 m wide, making it by far the largest of its kind in Iceland. The cave has a wide entrance but narrows down in some places. An iron gate was installed at the first constriction in 1991 to preserve those of the delicate lava formations or speleothems which hadn't already been destroyed. Evidence of human habitation, probably dating to the Viking Age, has been discovered in the cave and is preserved in the National Museum of Iceland. Long stretches of the cave floor are very rough and shouldn't be navigated without a guide. Access and guided tours are provided at nearby Fljótstunga. Lava tubes are formed when a low-viscosity lava flow develops a continuous and hard crust which then thickens and forms a roof above the molten lava stream. When the eruption subsides, the still-molten lava moving beneath the crust will continue to drain downhill, leaving an open lava tube.[2] Many other lava tubes have been discovered in Hallmundarhraun, most notably Surtshellir and Stefánshellir. 2022
Karlinn („The Man“) is a 50-60 m high seacliff, an eroded volcanic plug, which stands high and mighty just off the coast of Valahnúkur. Karlinn is popular spot with visitors and especially among photographers, as it is truly picturesque when the unremitting waves hit the rock.
Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into Hvítá, from ledges of less porous rock in the lava. 2022
Forced to land due to severe icing, 17171 was written off and unsalvaged parts of the aircraft remained at the site.[1] As of 2022, the fuselage of the aircraft remains relatively intact, leading to the site becoming a popular tourist destination.[2][3][4] The wreck has accumulated superficial damage from graffiti, gunfire, and tourists over the years.[5][6] Tours to the site are available[4] and the trek back-and-forth takes about two to three hours. In January 2020, two Chinese tourists died of hypothermia near the wreckage after getting caught in a storm that went over the area.[3][7] A month later, SAR units had to rescue several tourists that had ignored a warning from the police to not trek to the wreckage due to deteriorating weather in the area. 2022
At the Diamond Beach, the icebergs which fill the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon wash up on shore, creating a stark contrast with the volcanic black sand. This beautiful display makes it a favourite location for photographers and nature lovers. Wildlife enthusiasts also frequent the site as many seals call the beach home, and it is one of the best places in the country to see orcas from the shore. The glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach are fantastical sites; however, the rate of their expansion is, unfortunately, a consequence of climate change as the glaciers retreat. With the rate that the caps are melting, there may be no ice left at either site within decades. 2022

Without a doubt, Jökulsárlón Lagoon and the larger Vatnajökull National Park are places in Iceland everyone needs to see. The lagoon offers a ghostly procession of luminous blue icebergs and a sight no one will forget. The main attraction in the Jökulsárlón Lagoon is the tongue of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. In the opening concert on 4 May 2011, Iceland Symphony Orchestra performed under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy with the Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson as soloist.[9] The concert was broadcast live on RÚV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service.[10] In the water next to Harpa is located the sculpture The Musician (1970) by the Icelandic sculptor Ólöf Pálsdóttir. The statue is of a cellist playing, and is modelled on the Danish cellist Erling Blöndal Bengtsson, who played constantly for Ólöf as he sat for her.[11] When the Orchestra was based at its previous home at the Háskólabíó, the statue was located on Hagatorg, but it followed the Orchestra in 2014.[12] The Icelandic Opera performs at the concert hall even though the venue is primarily designed for concerts, lacking a curtain, proscenium, and any of the traditional stage machinery.[13] Harpa is operated by Portus, a company owned by the Icelandic government and the City of Reykjavík. In 2013, the building won the European Union's Mies van der Rohe award for contemporary architecture.[2] The first director of Harpa was Halldór Guðmundsson.[14] The current director of Harpa is Svanhildur Konráðsdótir. In 2017, the venue held the annual World Yo-Yo Contest, where over a thousand contestants from over 30 countries competed for the six champion titles. It was only the second time ever the contest was held in Europe.[15] Japanese competitors swept the five freestyle divisions, while Swiss performance art duo Inmot!on won the artistic performance division. 2022
Vatnajökull is Europe's largest glacier outside the arctic, with a surface area of 8,100 km2.Generally measuring 400–600 m in thickness and at the most 950 m, the glacial ice conceals a number of mountains, valleys and plateaus. It even hides some active central volcanoes, of which Bárðarbunga is the largest and Grímsvötn the most active. While the icecap rises at its highest to over 2,000 m above sea level, the glacier base reaches its lowest point 300 m below sea level. Nowhere in Iceland, with the exception of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, does more precipitation fall or more water drain to the sea than on the south side of Vatnajökull. In fact, so much water is currently stored in Vatnajökull that the Icelandic river with the greatest flow, Ölfusá, would need over 200 years to carry this quantity of water to sea.[4] The scenery encircling the glacier is extremely varied. Towards the north, the highland plateau is divided by glacial rivers, with powerful flows in summer. The volcanoes of Askja, Kverkfjöll and Snæfell [ˈstnaiːˌfɛtl̥] tower over this region, together with the volcanic table mountain Herðubreið. Long ago, huge glacial floods carved out the canyon of Jökulsárgljúfur in the northern reaches of this plateau. The mighty Dettifoss waterfall still thunders into the upper end of this canyon, while the scenic formations at Hljóðaklettar [ˈl̥jouːðaˌkʰlɛhtar̥] and the horseshoe-curved cliffs of Ásbyrgi are found farther north. 2022
The plane crash became popular after being featured in a number of music videos and has been visited by various celebrities. In particular, the documentary Heima by Sigur Rós features the plane, which was one of the earlier references to it in popular culture. Perhaps most famously though, Justin Bieber used the crashed plane in his 2015 music video for the song “I’ll Show You”, in which he is seen skateboarding on the roof, and this was the year that the planes popularity really soared. It’s also a very popular location for photographers in Iceland, given its unique look. All of these factors have combined to make this one of the “must-see” stops when visiting Iceland, especially if you’re a keen photographer like me! 2022
The Shape called my attention... The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a region in western Iceland known for its dramatic landscapes. At its western tip, Snæfellsjökull National Park is dominated by Snæfellsjökull Volcano, which is topped by a glacier. Nearby, a trail leads through lava fields to black-pebble Djúpalónssandur Beach. In Stykkishólmur fishing village, the 19th-century wood-frame Norwegian House is a regional museum with a craft shop..2022
Gullfoss (translated to 'Golden Falls') is one of Iceland's most iconic and beloved waterfalls, found in the Hvítá river canyon in Southwest Iceland. 2022
Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the daughter of Tómas Tómasson who owned the waterfall in the first half of the 20th century must have felt the same. She lived at a farm nearby and loved Gullfoss as no one else. At this period of time much speculation about using Gullfoss to harness electricity was going on. Foreign investors who rented Gullfoss indirectly from the owners wanted to build a hydroelectric powerplant, which would have changed and destroyed Gullfoss forever. As the story goes it's thanks to Sigríður Tómasdóttir that we still can uplift ourself with the beauty of Gullfoss, because she was the one that protested so intensly against these plans by going as far to threat that she would throw herself into Gullfoss and therby kill herself.
For those who don’t know, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is the deepest lake in Iceland. But it’s not just any normal lake. What makes it so special is the way it’s formed by the melting glaciers of the Vatnajökull National Park. Currently, the lagoon is about 11 square miles in size (18 square kilometres). But it hasn’t always been this expansive. In fact, before the 1930s, Jökulsárlón wasn’t there at all—and, over the last 50 years, the lake has quadrupled in size. It will continue to grow as temperatures rise. As such, this gorgeous landform—with its drifting icebergs and hunting seals—is a testament to a warming world. If you’re lucky, you may experience for yourself the dramatic crumple and crash of blocks of ice that fall from the shrinking glacier. That ice you’re witnessing fall is thousands of years old. 2022

The light pillars are vertical columns because the fluttering ice-crystals are mostly flat to the ground, and their colors are those of the ground lights. The auroras cover the sky and ground in the green hue of glowing oxygen, while their transparency is clear because you can see stars right through them. shoot 2022
Reykjanesvíti lighthouse was first build in 1878, although it was damaged beyond repair just eight years later following a major earthquake. The current building was raised in 1907–1908 and, save from having gas installed in 1929, has remained little-changed since. Due to the erosion of the cliff on which it stands, however, it is expected that a new building will be needed in the next few years.
Situated on the hilltop Skólavörðuholt [ˈskouːlaˌvœrðʏˌhɔl̥t] near the centre of Reykjavík, the church is one of the city's best-known landmarks and is visible throughout the city. State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson's design of the church was commissioned in 1937. The ring was allegedly given to the local church. The old church door ring is now in the Skógar museum. At the eastern side of the waterfall, a hiking and trekking trail leads up to the pass Fimmvörðuháls between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. Kvárjokull glacier is located in Iceland and the glacial lagoon it contains may be found immediately next to the ring road, roughly 30 kilometers to the west of Jokulsárlón, with coordinates ranging from 63.9558 degrees north and 16.5286 degrees west. Kvárjokull glacier tongue runs down the south side of Öræfajökull glacier around 3 kilometers to the south of the glacier, reaching heights of up to 150 meters. It is very steep, and right in front of the glacier‘s leading edge is a tiny glacial lagoon that has been developing there over the course of the previous many decades. It is roughly 356.2 kilometers from Reykjavik to the Kvárjokull glacier, which can be traveled in 4 hours and 34 minutes if tourists use Route 1 and Þjóðvegur. The glacier’s surroundings are particularly magnificent due to the large terminal moraine hills that surround it. The glacier was larger at the turn of the century as dis[;ayed by these hills. The terminal moraine on the eastern edge of the river Kvíá is approximately 129 meters high; while the terminal moraine on the western side of the river is approximately 150 meters high. It’s a great place to take a break as the scenery is breathtaking. If travelers are coming from the Jokulsárlón glacier lagoon, they will reach a bridge over Vestari-Kvá which is around 20 kilometers to the west of Jokulsárlón. Only a short distance after crossing the bridge, there is a path branching off to the right. A parking spot can be reached in a rather quick car ride. The hiking track, which is around 300 meters in length, will lead travelers to a location directly in front of the Kvárjokull glacier tongue. This location may be accessed from the viewpoint.

The roof of the lava tube has collapsed, creating two large openings near its north end which are the only known entrances. Víðgelmir is 1585 m long and the largest part of the cave passage is 15.8 m high and 16.5 m wide, making it by far the largest of its kind in Iceland. The cave has a wide entrance but narrows down in some places. An iron gate was installed at the first constriction in 1991 to preserve those of the delicate lava formations or speleothems which hadn't already been destroyed. Evidence of human habitation, probably dating to the Viking Age, has been discovered in the cave and is preserved in the National Museum of Iceland. Long stretches of the cave floor are very rough and shouldn't be navigated without a guide. Access and guided tours are provided at nearby Fljótstunga. Shoot 2022
Kerlingarfoss is a waterfall in the west of Iceland on the peninsular Snæfellsnes. The river Fossá/Fosslaekur drops down over appr. 60 meter and continues its way to the Atlantic Ocean Kerlingarfoss is a nice waterfall and is located between Ólafsvík and Rif, along road 574. From road 574 there is a dust road going to the farm Sveinnstadir, drive further on and keep left. From the end of the road, at a house/farm called Foss, it is about 500 meters walking to the Kerlingarfoss. Not far from the Kerlingarfoss there is also another waterfall called Svöðufoss in the river Laxa, east of Kerlingarfoss. Shoot 2022
People have been told that the wreck is of a Douglas DC3, and so it states in most all popular blogs that can be found about the airplane. Some tell that it in deed is a Douglas DC3 Special, specially built for the US navy as a cargo plane. But the truth is different. The worlds most famous DC3 wreck that is sitting on top of its grave in a post-apocalyptic surrounding of vast sand dunes brought down to Sólheimasandur by glacial flooding is in fact a converted Douglas C-117.
The glacier is responsible for the formation of a large outwash plain called Breiðamerkursandur. It has a breadth of around 25 km and serves as bird habitat in the summer month. This outwash plain is constantly changing. The shoreline of the glacial lagoon used to be advancing, but is now retreating as there is a decrease in glacial rivers depositing material. However, as the glaciers melt, the land rises around 2–4 cm each year somewhat balancing out the retreating shoreline.
Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon, bordering Vatnajökull National Park in southeastern Iceland. Its still, blue waters are dotted with icebergs from the surrounding Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, part of larger Vatnajökull Glacier. Breiðamerkurjökull Sapphire Ice Cave. Breiðamerkurjökull glacier is a big outlet glacier from the south side of Vatnajökull glacier that crawls down to the Breiðamerkursandur black sand area between Skaftafell in the west and Höfn in Hornafjörður town in the east. The glacier covers around 17 square kilometres and it has curved a big deep valley that goes down to around 300 metres below sea level. The glacier has retreated a lot for the past 50 years. but before the glacier was increasing and it destroyed some of the farms there. The last Farm that the glacier did go over was in the year 1702 the farmer's name was Breiðamörk and the glaciers has it name from the farm and is called Breiðamerkurjökull.

Faxa Bay, Icelandic Faxaflói, inlet of the North Atlantic Ocean on the southwestern coast of Iceland. It indents the coast for 30 miles (50 km) and extends for 50 miles (80 km) between the Snaefells and Reykja peninsulas, to the north and south, respectively. The bay is the largest in Iceland, and its banks form excellent fishing grounds. The farm of Foss á Síðu has been inhabited since Iceland's Settlement Era, between 874 and 930 AD. It is mentioned in one of the earliest pieces of Icelandic literature, the Book of Settlement, which has been a vital tool for historians in understanding the story of Iceland and the lineages of its people. The site has also had one of Iceland's mysterious legends surrounding, which goes back to the 16th Century. It is said that because of the wicked ways of one man, a family was cursed for nine generations. The spectre that haunted them was a dog, Móri, whom many still claim to see in the area. In spite of his ruthlessness to this particular family, he has never been reported to have harmed any others. As it is just 10 kilometres east of the village of Kirkjubæklaustur, which was historically a centre of religion and piety, this legend was most likely exaggerated as a fear-mongering technique, warning the untoward of God's potential wrath. Why it has been inhabited so long, in spite of the curse, becomes apparent when you see it. The farm is on a verdant hillock, against a dramatic set of cliffs that hold a beautiful waterfall. The word 'Foss' means 'Falls in Icelandic, and the literal translation of the name is 'the Falls at Siðú'. Shoot 2023
Another waterfall, Barnafoss, is on the river Skjálfandafljót near the abandoned farm Barnafell in Ljósavatn County. There the river runs in a narrow, and close to 100 metres (330 ft) deep canyon. According to legends, young and brave men jumped across its narrowest parts. During prolonged subzero periods, the spray creates an ice arch across the river above the waterfall and sometimes a rope was strung across the river there to quicken this development. Hálsanefshellir Cave is a huge sea cave located at the beach close to the small town Vík. The cave is exceptional because of octagonal basalt pillars at the cave entrance. The vertical columns are quite similar to Fingal's Cave on Staffa Island. And the beach in front is the famous Reynisfjara black beach, which consists of the eroded black basalt. shoot 2023
Svartifoss (Icelandic for "black waterfall") is a waterfall in Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name. The base of this waterfall is noteworthy for its sharp rocks. New hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges. These basalt columns have provided inspiration for Icelandic architects, most visibly in the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík, and also the National Theatre. Shoot 2022
The Jökulsárlón lake provides outstanding views of the ice cap, a vast dome of ice that rises to a height of 3,000 ft (910 m). It spills to the lagoon 12 mi (19 km) away from the jagged glacier hill to the edge of the water line. The lake developed only about 60 years ago (1948 is mentioned), when the entire area was less than 100 ft (30 m) of glacier, which was only 250 yd (230 m) from the Atlantic Ocean, and 2 mi (3.2 km) away from Vatnajökull. Vatnajökull was at the shore line of the ocean and dropped icebergs into the ocean. However, it started drifting inland rapidly every year, leaving deep gorges en route, which got filled with melted water and large chunks of ice. These icebergs gather at the mouth of the lake's shallow exit, melt down into smaller ice blocks, and roll out into the sea. In summer, icebergs melt and roll down the channel into the sea. The lake does not freeze in winter. Ice water and soil make a unique ecological phenomenon.[citation needed] Jökulsárlón Lake, the "glacier lake", is now reported to have doubled in size in the recent 15-year period. The huge blocks of ice that calve from the edge of Vatnajökull are about 30 m (98 ft) high, which fills the lagoon stocked with icebergs.[5][8][9][10] Some icebergs appear naturally sculpted on account volcanic ash from ancient eruptions that partly covers them. Ice caves are incredibly rare phenomena that require very specific conditions to form and are only accessible in Iceland during the winter months. The one that has opened this year is larger than in previous years and is so blue that you are sure to get great photos. The diverse shades and the way the light interacts with the ice provide an air of the fantastical.
